The Mahj Around Town Scramble is a seasonal mahjong series created to bring players together through consistent games, new connections, and a little friendly competition along the way.
Whether you play just for fun or enjoy a more competitive table, the Scramble makes it easy to play more often, meet new players, and stay connected throughout the season.

Gather around the table, play in person, submit your results, and follow the leaderboard throughout the season.

The Basics

  • 9-week seasons with 4 seasons each year
  • Play on your schedule—no weekly play requirement
  • All games are played in person
  • NMJL rules apply (no blanks)
  • Open to players of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced

How Matches Work

Players use the Scramble portal to create or join matches throughout the season.

Each match includes:

  • 4 registered Scramble players
  • 4 games total, with each player dealing once

When creating a match, players choose:

  • Date and time
  • Location (home, coffee shop, wine bar, restaurant, brewery, club, etc.)
  • Match style: Social- relaxed and connection-focused. Focused- more strategic and competitive play

Once four players are confirmed, the match is set.

Scoring + Leaderboards

After each match, scores are submitted through the portal and automatically added to the season rankings.

We track two leaderboard styles:

  • Cumulative Leaderboard — your top 2 scores each week (Monday–Sunday) count toward your ranking
  • Average Leaderboard — calculated using all matches played throughout the season

To qualify for the Average Leaderboard, players must complete at least 6 matches during the season.

The Scramble Portal

The portal is your go-to hub for the season. Inside, you can:

  • Create and join matches
  • Submit scores
  • Follow live leaderboard standings
  • Browse the player directory
  • Connect with other Scramblers in your area

A Few Key Guidelines

  • All matches must be played in person
  • Matches must include 4 registered Scramble players to qualify
  • Substitute or non-registered players make the match ineligible for scoring
  • Three-player matches do not count toward standings
  • Standard NMJL rules are followed for all official play
